"'JOURNALIST' PAUL CONROY IS MI6 OPERATIVE"

" MI6's Paul Conroy in Libya (in blue bulletproof vest) with, on the right, Al-Qaeda leaders Mahdi al-Harati (in black body armor) and Abdelhakim Belhaj (in camouflaged jacket)."

From Voltaire Network, 7 March 2012. (www.voltairenet.org/a173025):

Portrayed as a photojournalist for The Sunday Times, Paul Conroy, who has recently escaped from the Islamic Emirate of Baba Amr (Homs in Syria), is a British MI6 agent.

In the photo we see Conroy with Mahdi al-Harati.

According to former Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, Mahdi al-Harati is still wanted in Spain for his involvement in the Madrid bombings of March 11, 2004.

In 2010, with a well-groomed beard and an NGO cover, Mahdi al-Harati was planted by MI6 in the "Freedom Flotilla," which was on a mission to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Mahdi al-Harati led the Al Qaeda brigade who besieged the Rixos Hotel in Tripoli in August 2011. According to Khamis Gaddafi, he was overseen by French instructors.

According to a high-level foreign military source, NATO had given al-Harati the assignment of capturing the Libyan leaders who sheltered in a secret facility of the hotel, and of murdering former congressman and Martin Luther King assistant, Walter Fauntroy, who was staying in the hotel.

Mahdi al-Harati was also to eliminate two Voltaire Network writers, Thierry Meyssan and Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya, who were based at the Radisson Hotel, whence al-Harati operated his torture center.

This decision had been made at a meeting restricted to the NATO command in Naples a few days earlier.

The meeting minutes mentioned the presence of Alain Juppé. When questioned, his secretariat denied any involvement by the French Foreign Minister, saying that he was on vacation at that time.

In October 2011, Mahdi al-Harati organized a model village in Syria located in the mountains on the Turkish border.

For two months, he hosted Western reporters singing them the praises of the Syrian "revolution."

The village is inhabited by a tribe that was paid to stage demonstrations and pose for the press. Al-Harati was visited in particular by Paul Moreira of Canal Plus and Edith Bouvier of Le Figaro.

Conroy associated with Abdel Hakim Belhaj.

Belhaj is Ayman al-Zawahiri’s right-hand man, and currently Al Qaeda’s number two commander.

Although officially still one of most wanted criminals in the world, NATO named him military governor of Tripoli.

Abdel Hakim Belhaj holds a Qatar residence permit.

Abdel Hakim Belhaj has recently made several trips to Turkey, where he was given an office on the NATO base at Incirlik, and to Syria where he built up several groups comprising up to 1,500 combatants. According to Ayman al-Zawahiri, it was his men who perpetrated the attacks in Damascus and Aleppo.

His organization, the Islamic Fighting Group in Libya, has merged with Al-Qaeda but still figures on the terrorist list of the U.S. State Department and the British Home Office.

By associating with renowned terrorists, Conroy falls within the scope of the law of both in United States and Great Britain for complicity or association with a terrorist group.

He faces 15 years in prison, unless he pleads immunity as an agent of the Crown.

For the current attack on Syria, "a coordination office was established in Qatar under American-Gulf sponsorship.

"The office includes American, French, and Gulf - specifically from Qatar and Saudi Arabia - intelligence agents, as well as CIA, Mossad, and Blackwater agents and members of the Syrian Transitional Council.

"Qatar has also made deals with Israeli and American companies to arm the armed groups, and Gulf countries have been financing the agreements."

Around 700 Arab and Western gunmen surrendered in Baba Amro, in Syria, "well-informed sources told Al-Manar website."

"The captured gunmen held Arab nationalities, including Gulf, Iraqi, and Lebanese… among them were also Qatari intelligence agents and non-Arab fighters from Afghanistan, Turkey, and some European countries like France...

"Advanced Israeli, European, and American arms that have not yet been tested in the countries of manufacture, in addition to Israeli grenades, night binoculars, and communication systems were confiscated by the security forces."

Nicola Jones, writing in New Scientist, 19 November 2001, (Taliban nuclear documents mirror spoof article - 19 November 2001 ...) pointed out that 'Taliban nuclear documents' found by BBC reporter John Simpson were identical to a spoof article.

In 2001, John Simpson claimed he had found documents strewn on the floor of a Taliban recruitment centre in Kabul. He claimed these documents apparently described how to build a thermonuclear device.

The documents, according to Simpson showed "how dangerous Bin Laden's Al Qaeda network aspired to be".

According to the New Scientist:

The sentences shown in focus by the camera also come from a famous document called "Weekend Scientist: Let's Make a Thermonuclear Device", which was first published in 1979 as a humour piece by The Journal of Irreproducible Results.

Reportedly, John Simpson was a university friend of a former head of MI6.

MI6 spread lies to put Suharto into power, according to Foreign Office documents.

This was reported by theUK's Independent newspaper, 16 April 2000. (http://www.independent.co.uk/story.jsp?story=20187 / http://www.bilderberg.org/sis.htm)

Foreign Office documents reportedly show that the world's media was lied to by British intelligence as part of a plot to overthrow Indonesia's President Sukarno in the 1960s.

The BBC, the Observer and Reuters carried 'fake stories' manufactured by agents working for the Foreign Office.

Propaganda expert Norman Reddaway noted, in a letter to Britain's Jakarta ambassador Sir Andrew Gilchrist, that Gilchrist's stories were broadcast via the BBC.

This included an apparently invented story that Indonesian communists were planning to slaughter the citizens of Jakarta.

Reddaway's letter suggests that the Observer newspaper was persuaded to take the Foreign Office "angle" on the Indonesian takeover by reporting a "kid glove coup without butchery".

Cabinet papers show that British spies, including MI6, supported Islamic guerrillas in order to destabilise Sukarno.

Former government minister Lord Healey said: "Norman Reddaway had an office in Singapore. They began to put out false information and I think that, to my horror on one occasion, they put forged documents on the bodies of Indonesian soldiers we had taken."

Lord Healey denied any personal knowledge of the MI6 campaign to arm opponents of Sukarno. But, he added: "I would certainly have supported it."

DAVID MILLER, at Spinwatch, writes that journalists working for the Services Sound and Vision Corporation (SSVC) have provided news reports to the BBC.

The SSVC is funded by the Ministry of Defence as a propaganda operation.

Spinwatch reveals that Britain has fake journalists.

The government pays for their wages and they provide news as if they were normal journalists rather than paid propagandists.

Normally they work for British Forces Broadcasting Service.

BFBS is run by the SSVC.

BBC World Service is reportedly funded by the Foreign Office. Their journalists are reportedly employed by the SSVC, the Services Sound and Vision Corporation.

The Foreign Office reportedly runs a network of fake news operations.

One of these is allegedly British Satellite News.

BSN is broadcast over the Reuters World News Service.

Former UK cabinet minister Michael Meacher wrote in the Guardian, November 21, 2003, about Operation Rockingham.

David Kelly, giving evidence to the prime minister's intelligence and security committee, said: "Within the defence intelligence services I liaise with the Rockingham cell."

Former chief weapons inspector in Iraq, Scott Ritter, was a US military intelligence officer.

He declared, before the Iraq war, that almost all of Iraq's WMD had been destroyed as a result of inspections, and the rest either used or destroyed in the first Gulf war.

In the Scottish Sunday Herald in June 2003, Ritter said: "Operation Rockingham [a unit set up by defence intelligence staff within the MoD in 1991] cherry-picked intelligence.

"It received hard data, but had a preordained outcome in mind.

"It only put forward a small percentage of the facts when most were ambiguous or noted no WMD...

"It became part of an effort to maintain a public mindset that Iraq was not in compliance with the inspections.

"They had to sustain the allegation that Iraq had WMD [when] Unscom was showing the opposite...

"Rockingham staff were ... selectively culling [picking out] reports that sustained the [WMD] claims. They ignored the vast majority of the data which mitigated against such claims."

According to Michael Meacher: "Within the UK intelligence establishment... Rockingham clearly had a central, though covert, role in seeking to prove an active Iraqi WMD programme.

Ritter said: "Rockingham was the source of some very controversial information which led to inspections of a suspected ballistic missile site. We ... found nothing. However, our act of searching allowed the US and UK to say that the missiles existed."

Ritter says that Rockingham officers were acting on political orders "from the very highest levels".

It was revealed by sections of the Scottish press that the deputy director of the Lockerbie trial briefing unit at Glasgow University, Professor Andrew Fulton, was an MI6 intelligence officer.

The unit was supposed to provide "impartial and objective" legal information about the trial and was much used by the TV news programmes.

24/05/00 THE SCOTSMAN:

"Prof Fulton has been 'on holiday' since it was revealed that during his 30 year diplomatic career he was a key memberof the MI6 secret service in Europe, Asia and America."

Allegedly, Dominic Lawson, who has worked for the BBC, and who once edited the Sunday Telegraph, has links to MI6 and Princess Diana.

Can you trust the BBC news? How many journalists are working for the security services?

Roy Greenslade, media specialist at the Telegraph (formerly the Guardian), has written that most media outlets "are playthings of MI5."

Bloch and Fitzgerald, in their examination of covert UK warfare, report the editor of “one of Britain’s most distinguished journals” as believing that more than half its foreign correspondents were on the MI6 payroll.

And in 1991, Richard Norton-Taylor revealed in the Guardian that 500 prominent Britons paid by the CIA and the now defunct Bank of Commerce and Credit International, included 90 journalists.

HACKS AND SPOOKS

By Professor Richard Keeble

In their analysis of the contemporary secret state, Dorril and Ramsay gave the media a crucial role...

A brief history

Going as far back as 1945, George Orwell no less became a war correspondent for the Observer - probably as a cover for intelligence work. Significantly most of the men he met in Paris on his assignment, Freddie Ayer, Malcolm Muggeridge, Ernest Hemingway were either working for the intelligence services or had close links to them.

Stephen Dorril, in his seminal history of MI6, reports that Orwell attended a meeting in Paris of resistance fighters on behalf of David Astor, his editor at the Observer and leader of the intelligence service’s unit liasing with the French resistance.

The release of Public Record Office documents in 1995 about some of the operations of the MI6-financed propaganda unit, the Information Research Department of the Foreign Office, threw light on this secret body - which even Orwell aided by sending them a list of “crypto-communists”.

Set up by the Labour government in 1948, it 'ran' dozens of Fleet Street journalists and a vast array of news agencies across the globe until it was closed down by Foreign Secretary David Owen in 1977.

According to John Pilger in the anti-colonial struggles in Kenya, Malaya and Cyprus, IRD was so successful that the journalism served up as a record of those episodes was a cocktail of the distorted and false in which the real aims and often atrocious behaviour of the British intelligence agencies was hidden.

And spy novelist John le Carré, who worked for MI6 between 1960 and 1964, has made the amazing statement that the British secret service then controlled large parts of the press – just as they may do today.

In 1975, following Senate hearings on the CIA, the reports of the Senate’s Church Committee and the House of Representatives’ Pike Committee highlighted the extent of agency recruitment of both British and US journalists.

And sources revealed that half the foreign staff of a British daily were on the MI6 payroll.

David Leigh, in The Wilson Plot, his seminal study of the way in which the secret service smeared through the mainstream media and destabilised the Government of Harold Wilson before his sudden resignation in 1976, quotes an MI5 officer: “We have somebody in every office in Fleet Street”

Leaker King

And the most famous whistleblower of all, Peter (Spycatcher) Wright, revealed that MI5 had agents in newspapers and publishing companies whose main role was to warn them of any forthcoming “embarrassing publications”.

Wright also disclosed that the Daily Mirror tycoon, Cecil King, “was a longstanding agent of ours” who “made it clear he would publish anything MI5 might care to leak in his direction”.

Selective details about Wilson and his secretary, Marcia Falkender, were leaked by the intelligence services to sympathetic Fleet Street journalists.

Wright comments: “No wonder Wilson was later to claim that he was the victim of a plot”. King was also closely involved in a scheme in 1968 to oust Prime Minister Harold Wilson and replace him with a coalition headed by Lord Mountbatten.

Hugh Cudlipp, editorial director of the Mirror from 1952 to 1974, was also closely linked to intelligence, according to Chris Horrie, in his recently published history of the newspaper.

David Walker, the Mirror’s foreign correspondent in the 1950s, was named as an MI6 agent following a security scandal while another Mirror journalist, Stanley Bonnet, admitted working for MI5 in the 1980s investigating the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.

Maxwell and Mossad

According to Stephen Dorril, intelligence gathering during the miners’ strike of 1984-85 was helped by the fact that during the 1970s MI5’s F Branch had made a special effort to recruit industrial correspondents – with great success.

In 1991, just before his mysterious death, Mirror proprietor Robert Maxwell was accused by the US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh of acting for Mossad, the Israeli secret service, though Dorril suggests his links with MI6 were equally as strong.

Following the resignation from the Guardian of Richard Gott, its literary editor in December 1994 in the wake of allegations that he was a paid agent of the KGB, the role of journalists as spies suddenly came under the media spotlight – and many of the leaks were fascinating.

For instance, according to The Times editorial of 16 December 1994: “Many British journalists benefited from CIA or MI6 largesse during the Cold War.”

The intimate links between journalists and the secret services were highlighted in the autobiography of the eminent newscaster Sandy Gall.

He reports without any qualms how, after returning from one of his reporting assignments to Afghanistan, he was asked to lunch by the head of MI6.

“It was very informal, the cook was off so we had cold meat and salad with plenty of wine. He wanted to hear what I had to say about the war in Afghanistan. I was flattered, of course, and anxious to pass on what I could in terms of first-hand knowledge.”

And in January 2001, the renegade MI6 officer, Richard Tomlinson, claimed Dominic Lawson, the editor of the Sunday Telegraph and son of the former Tory chancellor, Nigel Lawson, provided journalistic cover for an MI6 officer on a mission to the Baltic to handle and debrief a young Russian diplomat who was spying for Britain.

Lawson strongly denied the allegations...

Growing power of secret state

Since September 11 all of Fleet Street has been awash in warnings by anonymous intelligence sources of terrorist threats.

According to former Labour minister Michael Meacher, much of this disinformation was spread via sympathetic journalists by the Rockingham cell within the MoD.

A parallel exercise, through the office of Special Plans, was set up by Donald Rumsfeld in the US. Thus there have been constant attempts to scare people – and justify still greater powers for the national security apparatus.

Similarly the disinformation about Iraq’s WMD was spread by dodgy intelligence sources via gullible journalists.

Thus, to take just one example, Michael Evans, The Times defence correspondent, reported on 29 November 2002: “Saddam Hussein has ordered hundred of his officials to conceal weapons of mass destruction components in their homes to evade the prying eyes of the United Nations inspectors.” The source of these 'revelations' was said to be 'intelligence'...

THE BBC'S JIMMY SAVILE AND CHILD ABUSE COVER-UP

Sir Jimmy Savile - Website for this image

The BBC stopped an investigation, by Newsnight, into allegations that BBC TV entertainer Sir Jimmy Savile sexually abused a teenage girl at the BBC's Television Centre.

BBC shelved Jimmy Savile sex abuse investigation 'to protect its own reputation'

A woman told Newsnight that Savile molested her when she was 14 or 15.

Newsnight found several women who said that Savile groomed and abused teenagers.

Newsnight was told of claims that two other TV celebrities, still alive, sexually abused girls at Television Centre in the 1970s.

The BBC bosses ordered that the investigation be dropped.

Duncroft School

All of the women making the allegations were former pupils of Duncroft Approved School in Staines, Surrey.

Two claimed that Savile gave them money in return for sex.

Savile was a regular visitor to this school.

Savile was a regular visitor to a number of institutions such as one on the 'child-abuse island' of Jersey where children were allegedly tortured and murdered.

In 2007, Surrey Police received a complaint from a woman who said she was sexually assaulted by Savile at Duncroft in the 1970s.

The allegation was investigated but no further action was taken.

Allegedly Jimmy Saville supplied kids to top people such as prime minister Ted Heath.

Allegedly, UK Prime Minister Edward Heath "would regularly take boys from certain care homes away on his boat for weekends....

"The name 'Mr. Eddy' was well known on Hampstead Heath and the boys home nearby in the seventies."

"ALLEGEDLY... the person bringing children for him to abuse was Sir Jimmy Savile.

"He was seen by the witness, victim, taking young boys onboard Heaths yacht the Morning Cloud when they were at party conference.

"Saville is known for supplying a number of high profile MP’s with children for them to sexually abuse."

On 29 October 2011, a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said:

'Police were called at 12.10pm today to the discovery of a man's body at a house in Roundhay, Leeds.

'The body of a man in his 80s was found at the property...'

The body was that of Sir Jimmy Savile.

Savile was a regular visitor to Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace, and Highgrove.

"In the 50s, when Savile was running dancehalls in the north, he earned himself a reputation as a hard man.

"Savile, the most Jewish Catholic you'll ever meet, asks me if I've been to Israel...

"He talks about the dancehall days. 'I wouldn't stand for any nonsense whatsoever. Ever, ever. I never threw anybody out. Tied them up and put them down in the bloody boiler house until I was ready for them'...

"The press has dogged him for years, determined to pin some nastiness on him. Savile says they have failed miserably. Is he talking about the paedophile rumours?"

Child abuse at a childrens' home in Jersey - "Seems Jimmy Saville, Wilfred Brambles (played the old boy in Steptoe) and at least one ex Tory cabinet minister are implicated.

"Saville has put out a gagging order, he was a regular visitor to the home.

"Very simiar to Kinocra and other similar scandals where masons conspired with top cops and those in high places to escape justice."

"Savile, the star of children’s television favourite Jim’ll Fix It, decided to start proceedings against the Rupert Murdoch paper after a series of articles linked the former Radio One DJ with Jersey children’s home Haut de la Garenne.

"The police are currently investigating the care home after human remains were found at the residence where children were allegedly tortured and sexually abused.

"On 1 March, Savile’s solicitors said, The Sun carried a photograph of the former Top of the Pops presenter allegedly visiting the Jersey home.

"This was followed with a series of articles. One asserted that Savile was unwilling to assist with the police investigation and another that he admitted having visited the home. The Sun also criticised Savile for being unprepared to 'go some way to fixing it for the victims'."

Sir Jimmy Savile and friends

"In the 1960′s ,The former Radio 1 DJ Alan ‘Fluff’ Freeman owned a large corner shop on the Lea Bridge Rd in London.

"This shop has recently been reported as a place where ‘Fluff’ held kinky parties ,attended by the likes of confirmed bachelor Sir Jimmy Saville , Jonathen King, the once jailed paedophile broadcaster & former pop star and Brian Epstein, who was at the time the Homosexual manager of the Beatles.

At these parties , young boys , specially brought over from several childrens homes would be plied with drugs and alcohol.

"However these parties were forced to come to an end when Police chiefs got wind that the MP & Ex Liberal Party leader Jeremy Thorpe was attending them along with several other prominent MP’s...

BBC SIDES WITH THE SPOOKS OVER LONDON TUBE BOMBINGS

BBC HQ

On 30 June 2009, the BBC news website tells us about the London Tube Bombing film, entitled 7/7 Ripple Effect.

Unmasking the mysterious 7/7 conspiracy theorist

According to the BBC, 7/7 Ripple Effect "accuses former prime minister Tony Blair, the government, the police and the British and Israeli security service of murdering the innocent people who died that day, in order to shore up support for the 'war on terror'".

"The video has become an internet hit...

"A host of internet films now claim the government account is a deception.

"7/7 Ripple Effect, released two years after the attacks, goes much further than just posing questions.

"The narrator alleges the four men blamed for the bombings were in fact fall guys in a government plot to win support for the war on terror; they were tricked into travelling to London with rucksacks on that day.

"CCTV that shows them arriving in London was supposedly just to incriminate them. The film claims that they were not on the trains that blew up.

"It's alleged the three men blamed for the Tube bombings were in fact murdered by police at Canary Wharf, after government agents set off pre-planted explosives to frame them...

"On 7 July 2005, there was a mock exercise preparing for a possible terror attack on the London underground, with a very similar scenario to what happened - three London stations...

"The Conspiracy Files 7/7, a BBC documentary, tracked down (the author of 7/7 Riple Effect) eventually finding him in the small town of Kells in Ireland. He is in fact John Hill, from Sheffield...

"John Hill has now been arrested and is facing extradition to the UK on a charge of perverting the course of justice for sending DVDs of 7/7 Ripple Effect to the judge and jury foreman in a trial linked to the attacks.

"This hasn't stopped his film. Alex Jones, who runs an internet site and a US radio show devoted to conspiracy theories, claims that 7/7 Ripple Effect has been 'just exploding all over the web' since Hills' arrest...

A selection of comments on the BBC website appears below.

I have seen this film and the fact that the government has seen fit not to order a public inquiry into the worst terrorist attack on London since the IRA ceased hostilities is puzzling and disturbing in itself. Crackpot or not, the film comes across as credible and does pose some serious questions which of course have never been answered. The execution of JC de Menezes also adds to the disquiet and I wish I could say that the arrest of the film maker comes as a surprise.
Logan McGeary, London

Well, I'm not into conspiracy theories but it happens to be completely true that the security services in both New York on 9/11 and London on 7/7 were running mock terrorist attack exercises. Make of that what you will.
Mike, Corby

We need an inquiry, more than that, we deserve an inquiry. It's absence is indicative of a government that has become utterly obsessed with secrecy, despite all of it's empty promises and hot-air about 'transparency'. An inquiry would take the wind out of the sails of extremist conspiracy-theorists, but, time after time, the government tells us that we have no right to know why our fellow Britons were blown up and killed. Are they, perhaps, scared that an inquiry would establish, for once and for all, that those attacks were a direct response to the foreign policy of Blair?
Dr Michael Swann, Thurso, Scotland

It is interesting that both the 9/11 and 7/7 attacks occurred at times when the political leader of the nation was suffering in public opinion, and that both these attacks have enabled the governments involved to introduce draconian measures in the name of "security". Whilst I do not actually believe that the governments were directly involved in either of these attacks (or at least I pray they were not), I am not so sure that they did not consciously ignore critical intelligence and thus allow the events to come to pass.

EXPENSES ROW PSYCHOLOGICAL OPERATION?

.

In the UK, the mainstream media has been attacking various top members of parliament because of their sleazy behaviour in regard to expenses.

The BBC has been particularly noisy in its criticism of Britain's legislators.

This might suggest that the media is not controlled by the security services.

But, the media still stays fairly silent on the big issues, such as 9 11, Lockerbie, the London Tube Bombings and various other acts reportedly carried out by cabals within the security services.

And, the whole expenses row begins to look like a psy-op designed to create a crisis, leading to fascism.

Olga Chetverikova, at voltairenet.org, wrote about Crisis as a way to build a global totalitarian state

To bring about fascism you wreck the financial system and then the system of democracy.

There are indications that the 'global elite' may use chaos and fear to achieve their aims.

Events may be made to follow the same path as the Great Depression in 1929-1933:

financial crisis and recession,

social conflicts,

dictatorships...

The paper was written in response to US court decisions of the time that restricted popular magazines from detailing how to make a bomb. Since all the information is freely available in public libraries anyway, the author said, he decided to provide a humorous "ten easy steps" proving how easy bomb building can be.

While the gist of these instructions may be accurate, for example giving suggested relative proportions of plutonium and TNT, they are written completely in jest.

The first instruction tells readers to obtain weapons grade plutonium at their "local supplier". It continues: "A nuclear power plant is not recommended, as large quantities of missing plutonium tends to make plant engineers unhappy. We suggest you contact your local terrorist organization."

The US Department of Energy generally refuses to comment on the accuracy of such documents. But they do say that about five kilograms of plutonium is theoretically enough to make a nuclear explosive device, while the recipe in The Journal of Irreproducible Results calls for 110 kilograms of plutonium.

The BBC film only allows a few parts of the documents to be read, but these few phrases are exactly as found in the 1979 paper: "Theory of operation ... the device basically works when ... critical mass then produces a nuclear chain reaction ... Plutonium (PU), atomic number ... and is similar in ...".

"From what I've seen, this is certainly a shortened version of the original article," says Marc Abrahams, former editor of The Journal of Irreproducible Results.

Some of the more obviously absurd parts of the original are missing from the document in Kabul, such as a paragraph starting "in next month's column, we will learn how to clone your neighbor's wife in six easy steps." The Kabul document also has paragraph returns in odd places, as if someone had cut and pasted the text.

Even so, says Abrahams, "if you spend half a second scanning any of this you should be able to tell it's a joke." He adds that if the instructions were made more believable by removing the ridiculous parts, there would be practically nothing left.

Reportedly, John Simpson was a university friend of a former head of MI6.

Can you trust the BBC news? How many journalists are working for the security services? The following extracts are from an article at the excellent Medialens

HACKS AND SPOOKS

By Professor Richard Keeble

And so to Nottingham University (on Sunday 26 February) for a well-attended conference...

I focus in my talk on the links between journalists and the intelligence services:

While it might be difficult to identify precisely the impact of the spooks (variously represented in the press as “intelligence”, “security”, “Whitehall” or “Home Office” sources) on mainstream politics and media, from the limited evidence it looks to be enormous.

As Roy Greenslade, media specialist at the Telegraph (formerly the Guardian), commented:

"Most tabloid newspapers - or even newspapers in general - are playthings of MI5."

In their analysis of the contemporary secret state, Dorril and Ramsay gave the media a crucial role. The heart of the secret state they identified as the security services, the cabinet office and upper echelons of the Home and Commonwealth Offices, the armed forces and Ministry of Defence, the nuclear power industry and its satellite ministries together a network of senior civil servants.

As “satellites” of the secret state, their list included “agents of influence in the media, ranging from actual agents of the security services, conduits of official leaks, to senior journalists merely lusting after official praise and, perhaps, a knighthood at the end of their career”.

Phillip Knightley, author of a seminal history of the intelligence services, has even claimed that at least one intelligence agent is working on every Fleet Street newspaper.

Set up by the Labour government in 1948, it “ran” dozens of Fleet Street journalists and a vast array of news agencies across the globe until it was closed down by Foreign Secretary David Owen in 1977.

Lawson strongly denied the allegations.

Similarly in the reporting of Northern Ireland, there have been longstanding concerns over security service disinformation. Susan McKay, Northern editor of the Dublin-based Sunday Tribune, has criticised the reckless reporting of material from “dodgy security services”. She told a conference in Belfast in January 2003 organised by the National Union of Journalists and the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission: “We need to be suspicious when people are so ready to provide information and that we are, in fact, not being used.” (

Growing power of secret state

Thus from this evidence alone it is clear there has been a long history of links between hacks and spooks in both the UK and US.

But as the secret state grows in power, through massive resourcing, through a whole raft of legislation – such as the Official Secrets Act, the anti-terrorism legislation, the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act and so on – and as intelligence moves into the heart of Blair’s ruling clique so these links are even more significant.

Thus, to take just one example, Michael Evans, The Times defence correspondent, reported on 29 November 2002: “Saddam Hussein has ordered hundred of his officials to conceal weapons of mass destruction components in their homes to evade the prying eyes of the United Nations inspectors.” The source of these “revelations” was said to be “intelligence picked up from within Iraq”. Early in 2004, as the battle for control of Iraq continued with mounting casualties on both sides, it was revealed that many of the lies about Saddam Hussein’s supposed WMD had been fed to sympathetic journalists in the US, Britain and Australia by the exile group, the Iraqi National Congress.

Sexed up – and missed out

During the controversy that erupted following the end of the “war” and the death of the arms inspector Dr David Kelly (and the ensuing Hutton inquiry) the spotlight fell on BBC reporter Andrew Gilligan and the claim by one of his sources that the government (in collusion with the intelligence services) had “sexed up” a dossier justifying an attack on Iraq.

The Hutton inquiry, its every twist and turn massively covered in the mainstream media, was the archetypal media spectacle that drew attention from the real issue: why did the Bush and Blair governments invade Iraq in the face of massive global opposition? But those facts will be forever secret.

Significantly, too, the broader and more significant issue of mainstream journalists’ links with the intelligence services was ignored by the inquiry.

Significantly, on 26 May 2004, the New York Times carried a 1,200-word editorial admitting it had been duped in its coverage of WMD in the lead-up to the invasion by dubious Iraqi defectors, informants and exiles (though it failed to lay any blame on the US President: see Greenslade 2004). Chief among The Times’ dodgy informants was Ahmad Chalabi, leader of the Iraqi National Congress and Pentagon favourite before his Baghdad house was raided by US forces on 20 May.

Then, in the Observer of 30 May 2004, David Rose admitted he had been the victim of a “calculated set-up” devised to foster the propaganda case for war. “In the 18 months before the invasion of March 2003, I dealt regularly with Chalabi and the INC and published stories based on interviews with men they said were defectors from Saddam’s regime.” And he concluded: “The information fog is thicker than in any previous war, as I know now from bitter personal experience. To any journalist being offered apparently sensational disclosures, especially from an anonymous intelligence source, I offer two words of advice: caveat emptor.”

Let’s not forget no British newspaper has followed the example of the NYT and apologised for being so easily duped by the intelligence services in the run up to the illegal invasion of Iraq.

THE ISRAELI CONTROLLED BBC

Lyons

Sir Michael Lyons is the Chairman of the, reportedly, much hated and utterly discredited BBC Trust.

Lyons is a Jew.

Anthony Fry is another of the BBC Trustees.

He has worked for the Rothschild Group.

The Independent (UK newspaper) on 16 April 2009 tells us about the BBC Trust which "is now a mouthpiece for the Israeli lobby." (story here.)

What did Jeremy Bowen do wrong?

Gaius

Marcus Ambrose Paul Agius was appointed the senior non-executive director on the BBC’s executive board.

Born into a Jewish family, Agius is married to Katherine, daughter of Edmund de Rothschild of the Rothschild banking family of England, with two children, and has a close involvement with the Rothschild family estate, Exbury Gardens in Hampshire.

THOMPSON

"Before Thompson took up his position as Director General of the BBC, the Guardian had reported on the ferocious pressure being exerted on news organisations by the Israeli government, including complaints about individual reporters:

The Israeli government has written to the BBC accusing its Middle East correspondent, Orla Guerin, of anti-semitism and "total identification with the goals and methods of the Palestinian terror groups".

"Orla Guerin’s offence was to run stories not just about the grief of Israeli families who had lost family members to suicide bombers but also stories about the grief and suffering of ordinary Palestinian families. As one blogger put it at the time:

Guerin’s real sin, of course, is to show some sympathy for the victims of the Israeli bombing (that’s enough to brand her a “terrorist”).

"Within days of Thompson meeting Sharon, Guerin was sacked as BBC TV Middle East correspondent and transferred to Africa.

The BBC isn't doing well under its Director-General for the past five years, Mark Thompson.

According to Broadcast magazine, on 7 April 2009, the BBC suffered its second worst peaktime performance since at least 2001, managing an audience share of only 5.3 per cent.

(With less than a million viewers, BBC licence fee is as hard to ...)

Thompson should be sacked.

Over the Gaza Appeal incident, Mark Thompson received backing from the BBC Trust's chairman, Sir Michael Lyons, who is Jewish.

Sir Michael Lyons should be sacked.

Complaint Response from the BBC

Dear Aangirfan

Thank you for your e-mail regarding our coverage of the recent conflict in Norway, Poland and elsewhere in Europe.

I understand you feel our coverage demonstrates a pro Nazi sympathy and that we're not prepared to help charities raise money for the terrorist 'victims' of the brave German army.

We're committed to concealing bias in respect of all our news reports.

We have interviewed a number of non-Germans on our programmes.

We've interviewed some of these ranting terrorist Poles.

In Norway, we interviewed that wise and wonderful Mr Quisling who has encouraged Norwegians to serve as volunteers in the Waffen SS.

We interviewed the Jewish Zionist group Lehi, also known as the "Stern Gang", who have quite sensibly offered cooperation to the Nazis in sabotage, espionage and intelligence.

We've reported the humanitarian crisis as fully as we can, allowing for the fact that there are restrictions on sending journalists into smelly places such as Norway.

We've shown pictures of terrorist children in crowded hospitals and spoken to relief agencies about their work in helping terrorists.

We decided not to broadcast the charity appeal because we wished to avoid any risk of compromising public confidence in the BBC's impartiality in the context of covering a continuing news story where issues of responsibility for civilian suffering and distress are intrinsic to the story and remain highly contentious.

We also could not be confident that the aid resulting from audience donations could reach those it was intended for at a time of a fragile ceasefire and sporadic border access.

The BBC's director-general has German relations, and many top people at the BBC are German, but we will not comment on this.

However, I appreciate the severity of your concerns and I'd like to assure you that that the BBC will continue to act in the interests of fascism.

Thank you again for contacting us with your concerns.

Regards

Marshall Philippe Pétain
