Report: Israel will ask to station jets in Cyprus

Israeli and Greek Cypriot officials are to discuss allowing the Israeli Air Force to station jets in Cyprus.

The issue will be raised during Netanyahu's visit to Cyprus sometime in January 2012.

In July 2011, at the Cypriot naval base at Zygi near Limassol, there was a massive explosion of munitions.

The munitions had been confiscated from a ship heading to Syria and had been stored close to Cyprus's largest power station. 13 people were killed and the power station was destroyed. (MOSSAD AND CYPRUS EXPLOSION)

In the past, Cypriot politicians spoke out against Israeli military attacks on Palestine and Lebanon; but now things appear to have changed.

In September 2011 Israel asked Cyprus to permit the stationing of its aircraft at the Andreas Papandreou airbase in Paphos.

In January 2012, Israel and Cyprus signed two defense agreements which Cypriot Minister of Defense Demetris Eliades said "set the basis for the further development of relations in the area of defense cooperation."

There is talk of co-operation between (Greek) Cyprus and Israel to construct a pipeline to transport gas to mainland Europe.

The UK and the US have had intelligence bases on Cyprus for many years.

They have sophisticated surveillance equipment on top of Mount Troodos. The USA has its listening post in Northern Cyprus.
