China is building a major port at Hambantota in Sri Lanka.
Hambantota is part of China's 'string of pearls' - ports which help China to keep an eye on very important sea lanes.
China's other "pearls" include the port of Gwadar in Pakistan.
Peter Symonds, on 24 March 2009, at Global Research, wrote about the US, China and the war in Sri Lanka
According to Peter Symonds:
1. China has given important military and financial aid to Sri Lanka.
2. Chinese military aid 'has helped tip the balance' in the civil war.
3. China has a $US1 billion deal with Sri Lanka to construct a major port in the southern town of Hambantota.
4. "Hambantota on the southern tip of Sri Lanka is just six nautical miles from the main east-west trade route across the Indian Ocean.
"Around 70 percent of China's oil imports is shipped via this sea lane from the Middle East through the Strait of Malacca to Chinese ports."
